Microsoft knows they have a good thing going with Kinect, and doesn't plan on letting that end anytime soon. Microsoft product manager David Dennis told Joystiq "And in anticipation of another record year in 2011," a press release trumpeting the console maker's strong NPD showings said, "Microsoft announced the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple by the end of the year." There are currently 26 titles available for Kinect, with another 26 known to be in development. Expect to see a lot of core, and casually oriented software announced at e3.

In a move that leaves me puzzled, Nintendo has decided to skip online play for Starfox 64 3DS. The game will feature single cart local multiplayer with up to four friends, but will not allow you to challenge others across the globe. It's a real shame, unlike many games that shoehorn in online elements Starfox 64 3DS is definitely a game that could have really benefited from online competitive play. It would have given many gamers who had already experience the game on Nintendo 64 another reason outside of the 3D and enhanced graphics to purchase this game. I hope this doesn't mean there won't be online scoreboards as well, as that would be another major missed opportunity.
Software
01. Mortal Kombat 2011 (PS3, 360) 02. Portal 2 (360, PS3, PC) 03. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Wii, NDS, 360, 3DS, PS3, PC) 04. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC) 05. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (360, PS3, Wii) 06. Crysis 2 (360, PS3, PC) 07. Just Dance 2 (Wii) 08. Michael Jackson The Experience (360, Wii, PS3, NDS, PSP) 09. Pokemon White Version (NDS) 10. NBA 2K11 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC) Hardware: Xbox 360 - 297K - Top Selling Console PlayStation 3 - 204.3K Things to note: Mortal Kombat had a stronger launch than Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3! That's pretty impressive. I'm also amazed that Just Dance 2 is still hanging in there, despite having released for only a single platform. Don't get confused by the lack of Kinect titles in the top ten, both Dance Central and Kinect Sports have cleared 2 million in sales worldwide, the peripheral is still very much a system seller. This will no doubt allow Microsoft to stick with their aging hardware, despite Nintendo announcing a new console at next month's e3. Chrono Trigger, widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time, will be hitting the Wii's virtual console service for the small price of 800 points. That's a measly $8 for one of the greatest games ever made- and you are getting a deal! In Japan the game cost an extra dollar for some unknown reason. Square-Enix decided to have mercy on us U.S. gamers...this time.
The Nintendo eShop downloadable games service for 3DS was supposed to launch sometime this month, but today Nintendo announced a small delay. The 3DS firmware update adding the eShop, DSiWare transfer, web browser and more will now be released Monday June 6th, with a Japanese release the following day. This new date directly coincides with Nintendo's e3 press conference. What a surprise!
The Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I, II, III (take a breath) collection features both the NES and SNES updates of the first three games in the famed Dragon Quest series. It is due this September for Japanese Wii gamers. I guess Square-Enix couldn't resist after seeing how well the "Limited" Super Mario All Stars 25th Anniversary bundle did for Nintendo. But this does serve a nice dual purpose, it gets gamers ready for Dragon Quest X, which is still slated to hit Wii at some point. I'm thinking we've got to see it at this year's E3 if it is still in fact coming for the Wii and not its successor.
Soul Calibur V was shown during a press conference at Namco Bandai's "Level Up Dubai 2011" event earlier today. Soulcalibur V is set to launch on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2012, with a story that takes place 17 years after the events of the previous game. I wonder what nonsensical characters Namco Bandai will include this time?
Yet another pair of Japanese video game developers are merging to stay afloat, Marvelous Entertainment and AQ Interactive. Marvelous has been offering the Wii strong support this generation, releasing a number of Harvest Moon games, the No More Heroes series and Murumasa Demon Blade, whereas AQ Interactive is better known for games like Korg DS-10, Bullet Witch, and Blue Dragon Plus. After the merger finalizes on October 1st the company will be known as Marvelous AQL.
Hi-Rez Studios has posted the first two gameplay screens from Tribes Ascend on the game's Facebook, so be sure to keep an eye out on that page for more Tribes goodness. There are way too many good FPS in the pipeline for me to possible handle by myself. This multiplayer-only, download-sized successor to Tribes 2 is due out before the end of the year on PC.
A couple of weeks ago Halo developer Bungie filed a trademark for Bungie Aerospace. Everyone was almost certain that this has something to do with their first game under Activision's wing, but could it be something more? It has recently been discovered that Bungie Aerospace has been incorporated in both Washington and Delaware. Could this be an entirely new studio? Bungie is currently working on putting together a private beta for whatever it is they are cooking up. We will likely find out what all of this is about at next month's e3. Wouldn't it be funny if we were all expecting an insanely awesome first person shooter and it ended up being a flight simulator? Bungie didn't always make Halo you know. |
