Toshiyuki Takahashi, better known as "Master Higgins", has announced on his personal blog that he is leaving Hudson after 26 years with the company. The man was know for his ability to hit an NES button 16 times in one second, creating a code in future Hudson games that frustrated me to no end, and his appearance in the Adventure Island games. After Konami's recent acquisition of Hudson and Takahashi's departure, I'd say that about does it for the Hudson we once knew and loved.

01. Mortal Kombat 2011 (PS3, 360) 02. Portal 2 (360, PS3, PC) 03. Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Wii, NDS, 360, 3DS, PS3, PC) 04. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC) 05. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (360, PS3, Wii) 06. Crysis 2 (360, PS3, PC) 07. Just Dance 2 (Wii) 08. Michael Jackson The Experience (360, Wii, PS3, NDS, PSP) 09. Pokemon White Version (NDS) 10. NBA 2K11 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC) Hardware: Xbox 360 - 297K - Top Selling Console PlayStation 3 - 204.3K Things to note: Mortal Kombat had a stronger launch than Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3! That's pretty impressive. I'm also amazed that Just Dance 2 is still hanging in there, despite having released for only a single platform. Don't get confused by the lack of Kinect titles in the top ten, both Dance Central and Kinect Sports have cleared 2 million in sales worldwide, the peripheral is still very much a system seller. This will no doubt allow Microsoft to stick with their aging hardware, despite Nintendo announcing a new console at next month's e3. Yet another pair of Japanese video game developers are merging to stay afloat, Marvelous Entertainment and AQ Interactive. Marvelous has been offering the Wii strong support this generation, releasing a number of Harvest Moon games, the No More Heroes series and Murumasa Demon Blade, whereas AQ Interactive is better known for games like Korg DS-10, Bullet Witch, and Blue Dragon Plus. After the merger finalizes on October 1st the company will be known as Marvelous AQL.
Earlier today there were reports that EA had early development kits for Microsoft's next gaming console and the company was planning to announce it at next month's e3. I didn't bother to post this because it wasn't realistic at all. After all, Microsoft just started staffing for the concept phases a couple of months ago. Jeff Brown, EA's director of corporate communications, told IGN that the story was "a total fabrication -- 100 percent not true." I can see how Xbox fans would hope this news to be true, but it turns out that's all it was- wishful thinking.
Level 22 Expo, the U.S.' first traveling gaming expo, has announced their first tour location. They will be taking Louisville, KY by storm on September 10 & 11 at the Kentucky Expo Center. The expo will bring over 50,000 square feet of exhibitor space with over 200 exhibitors at each tour stop. Another 50,000 square feet of space is dedicated to tournament play. Gamers can suggest which games are played at each stop through the Level22Expo.com website. The tour is also scheduled to come through Philadelphia, PA and Memphis, TN later this Fall, with many more cities planned for 2012. There's a chance I might drop by when they stop in Philly, the event sounds like it could be a really good time. UGO Entertainment, including 1UP.com, was acquired by IGN Entertainment in a deal that creates what is now the largest gaming news network on the internet. I hope this leads to even more excellent reviews like the ones they put out for GTA IV and Dead Space 2. I'm just kidding, those were terrible reviews. In case you are not sure what I am talking about, I suggest you check out IGN's review of GTA IV for gross hyperbole about the quality of its story, and Dead Space 2's review for a prime example of quality writing. Maybe this move will help keep IGN relevant just a while longer, but I doubt it considering how blatant they are about being bought off by large publishers.
Black Rock Studios, developer of racing favorite Split/Second, will be letting go around 40 employees this morning. The goal is to cut the studio down to a single team. The developer pitched a sequel to Split/Second to publisher Disney Interactive who shot down the project in its early stages. Since then Black Rock Studios hasn't had any projects to work on. Disney Interactive has been showing signs of wanting to get out of the gaming industry entirely, going as far as to cut a number of employees from Junction Point, the developer of the million plus selling Epic Mickey. I hope everyone effected by these layoffs finds work quickly, they are a talented bunch at Black Rock.
Konami can't wait until e3 to show you what they have in store for gamers this year so they are holding a live stream show 5 days before the event. They either have something big to announce, or more likely, are afraid of getting lost in the shuffle. Nintendo does have a new console to announce after all. The event will be streaming from several gaming sites and Konami will also host viewing parties in LA, San Francisco, Toronto, São Paulo, and Mexico City among other major cities.
One particularly hardcore ( or crazy) 3DS fan had a Mii AR card tattooed just below his left wrist. He won't ever have to worry about losing his card... but he might have to worry about explaining this to future children. It does work, as you can see in the picture, but only in dim lighting. This is probably one of the cooler gaming tattoos I have seen, but it still far too permanent for my tastes. The 3DS will be out another six years, but that tattoo will last for life.
Satoru Iwata recently revealed that Nintendo is still working on the Vitality Sensor they debuted at e3 a couple of years ago. I personally don't think it will show up on the Wii, but instead appear built into the next consoles controller like the grips on exercise equipment, but Iwata says there is another reason for the delay.
"This is a totally new type of entertainment, and there are large individual differences in the biological information of humans. For example, if it was acceptable that only 80% of the users thought the result was natural, then we could propose this to consumers right now. However, we are aiming for a level of quality in which 99% of consumers feel comfortable, and that is why this project is taking time to complete." If the vitality sensor does show up for the Wii I think Nintendo will attempt to keep the system alive for another couple of years, a "third pillar" like they tried to do with the DS, GBA and Wii. This way they could still cater to their new found casual audience, while focusing on the early adopter core crowd on the next system. Nintendo won't need to worry about attracting casual users right out of the gate because they will adopt the system gradually as it falls in price- and the system will likely be completely backwards compatible with the Wii. I do feel as though the vitality sensor could have some interesting applications for core games as well. Just imagine the next Fatal Frame changing gameplay elements in reaction to the quickening pace of your pulse. But we will probably see it in Wii Relax first. Source: Nintendo |
